Sweet Birch and Diabase

Douglas Miller September 16, 2018

This sweet birch and Triassic age diabase found at the Musser Boy Scout Reservation in Montgomery County, PA are locked in a positive feedback process as the growing root penetrates the bedrock float at the top of a ridge. The opening caused by the root allows water to penetrate and the physical action of freeze/thaw cycles act to further the disintegration of the boulder.
