Asimina Triloba, Paw Paw, or "Hillbilly Mango"

My friend and colleague Kim Steiner shared a paw paw fruit with me the other day. This is my first experience with Asimina Triloba! Kim has grown a paw paw from seed in his backyard—having acquired that seed from a local stand of paw paw near Lewistown.

The sweet smell of the fruit and the taste of the “custard” is just an amazing experience. If you’ve not had the privilege of experiencing this rare gem of the Appalachians, don’t delay!

Sweet Birch and Diabase

This sweet birch and Triassic age diabase found at the Musser Boy Scout Reservation in Montgomery County, PA are locked in a positive feedback process as the growing root penetrates the bedrock float at the top of a ridge. The opening caused by the root allows water to penetrate and the physical action of freeze/thaw cycles act to further the disintegration of the boulder.
